Gulf of Mexico 2015

Pensacola, FL to Austin, TX

DeRidder, LA to Kirbyville, TX - 45.2 mi

Great start today with nicely paved, quiet roads for miles.

TEXAS!!! Another new state for both of us.

Tonight, we are staying in a church of all places!  A great thanks to Jim for getting us all set up here. We feasted like kings with the help of their kitchen and a well stocked grocery store in town.

Get to share this space with another biker who is doing a coast to coast ride. Always enjoyable to talk shop for a night.

Kirbyville, TX to Silsbee, TX - 29.5 mi

Today was a straight shot down a road that was busier than we would like, but the shoulders were nice and wide and we didn't have far to go.

Red Cloud RV Park is a big recommend. For $15 they had lounge, pool and a kitchen. We sure miss cooking.

Silsbee, TX to Shepherd, TX - 61.9 mi

Some pretty tight roads this morning. Decided just to wait and let this one pass.

After a pretty tough ride we found our campground. It was more of a retreat set up by this family. Very odd but so cool at the same time.

  Our dinner table.

   Made another friend as well.

Shepherd, TX to Sam Houston National Forest - 47.0 mi

Thanks to the construction workers who let us though on our own private overpass avoiding a a 2 mile detour.

It's getting hot again. Looks like 90s for the rest of the trip.

Sam Houston National Forrest, TX to Navasota, TX - 41.1 mi

More cheese-less Pizza Hut.

Got an extra pie to go and bungeed it to the bike rack. The towns are getting bigger. Feels like we are getting close...

Camping out along an airstrip tonight.

Navasota, TX to La Grange, TX - 69.9 mi

The adventure cycling maps warned about traffic and minimal shoulders today. Instead we found back roads that turned out great.

We even found this guy and vegan pie!

La Grange, TX to Bastrop, TX - 48.6 mi

We road through two state parks today. It was a great ride but got a little hilly. Ran into some other cyclists today. They had started in San Diego and were headed to their home in the Florida Keys. Pretty cool.

 Finally spotted an armadillo.

   Crossed the Colorado River.

  Camping with miniature donkeys.

Bastrop, TX to Austin, TX - 38.8mi

We made it! Smooth ride into the city for our victory beverages of choice.

We will certainly have some fun in Austin for the next few days before packing the bikes up to head home. This was a great trip that we recommend.  Can't wait to get home to Mona and Ralphie!
